Macau, Special Adminisratine Region of China (since 20th December,1999), is located in the Guangdong province, on the western bank of the Pearl River Delta, covering an area of 27.3 sq. km. It lies 38 nautical miles (70 kilometers) from Hong Kong and some 145 kilometers from Guangzhou. It comprises of Macau Peninsula(8.7 sq. km, connected to Mainland China), Taipa (6.3 sq. km)and Coloane islands(7.6 sq. km). Macau is tiny - Hong Kong Island alone measures more than three times its size.
The total population is about 450,000 inhabitants, of which approximately 70% are Chinese nationals and 28% are Portuguese passport holders. The official languages are Portuguese and Chinese, Cantonese being most widely spoken and English is widely used in business and tourism gradually.
The climate is fairly warm tropical climates. Annual average temperature is about 20°C(68°F) and ranges from 16°C (50°F) to 25°C(77°F). Humidity levels are high and average values vary between 73% and 90%. Annual rainfall is 1.778mm, mostly during summer months.
Autumn (October – December) is the most pleasant time of the year. Days are sunny and warm and humidity levels are low. Winter (January – March) is cold ,yet you can expect to see clear skies. In April humidity increases and from May to September the climate becomes hot, humid and rainy with occasional tropical storms (typhoons).
In th summer visitors are advised to wear light cotton clothes. In winter some woolen clothes are recommended as well as a thicker jacket or even an overcoat. From March to May as well as from September to November nights are cooler and therefore a cardigan or sweater will be useful.
Macau international airport is on Taipa's east coast. Airport buses travel between the airport and major hotels on Taipa and the Macau Peninsula (every 15 minutes, US$0.80), and taxis meet all incoming flights (US$5).
Two bridges connect Macau to Taipa. The longest one (Friendship Bridge) leads directly to Macau International Airport located on the Island of Taipa.The new Lotus Flower Bridge connects Taipa to the Chinese mainland and meets the Guangzhou-Zhuhai highway. The islands are connected by a causeway which is 2.2 km long.
Besides the Barrier Gate (Portas do Cerco), the visitor can access Mainland China through the COTAI Frontier Post. Immigration and Customs are located in the reclaimed area between the islands of Taipa and Coloane.
